The Light of Reason (የአእምሮ ብርሃን)

"God created man with the capacity to understand and investigate. He who investigates with a pure mind and does not blind himself with prejudice will find the truth. The creator has endowed each of us with the light of reason to examine all teachings, to accept what is true, and to reject what is false."

✦ Senivo AI Note: Written in 1667 near the Tekezé River, Zara Yaqob's Hatata is recognized as an early landmark in rationalist philosophy, developed independently alongside Descartes in Europe.

(Original Ge'ez Script • 1667)

English Translation with Cultural Notes

"God created human beings with the capacity to understand and investigate. Whoever investigates with a clean heart and is not swayed by falsehood will discover the truth. The Creator has given us the light of reason to examine all claims, to validate what is truthful, and to discard what is deceptive."

Historical Context: Written by Zara Yaqob while hiding in a cave near the Tekezé River to escape persecution, this 1667 text is an extraordinary testament to African rationalist philosophy, advocating tolerance, critical inquiry, and gender dignity.
